Idiopathic Retroperitoneal Fibrosis

Abstract

|
This is a case report of the patient with idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis treated at the department of general surgery, Kang Nam Hospital. The patient was a 20 year old male admitted with complaints of lower back pain and obstructive symptoms of the urinary tract for one week.
An intravenous pyelography showed dilated ureters with partly displaced urinary bladder wall. An exploratory laparotomy disclosed a diffuse fibrosis of both abdominal and pelvic retroperitoneal soft tissue around the ureters and urinary bladder wall.
Partial removal and adhesiolysis were performed.
Histological features of the surgical specimen obtained during the adhesiolysis were consistent with idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis. The patient has been on a steroid regimen, which brought a relief of symptoms.
